A bőrszálak vastagságától és erősségétől függően a bőrfonás húzószárnak és felfüggesztő pántnak is alkalmas. Ahhoz, hogy egybefüggő, sima felülete legyen a fonásnak, hosszas előkészületre van szükség. A csíkok szabása után vékonyítani kell a hátoldalukat (azaz a húsoldalukat) a bőrszálaknak. Majd ahhoz, hogy kellőképpen egymásra feküdjenek a szálak, szélezni, tehát vékonyítani kell a szálak két oldalát. Így már akár fonásra kész állapotban lehetnek a szálak, de ha szükséges, jöhet a festés folyamata.
A bőrgomb legtöbbször a záródást segíti elő, de díszként is funkcionálhat.
